Chicago Dance Academy

Academy Division

This division is designed for students seeking rigorous and systematic dance training and is by invitation or staff approval only. Ballet is the focus and foundation in this nurturing and disciplined program. The number of classes per week increases with each level advanced to. Ages are an approximation: levels are at the discretion of the staff. Junior Studio Company accompanies Ballet II, and Studio Company accompanies Ballet II/III and up. There is an additional performance in January for these groups. Pointe and Contemporary classes are part of the II/III and above curriculum (there is also a tuition cap for these students).

Youth dance lessons for children ages 8 and up in ballet, jazz, and more.

Ballet III/IV

This class is by invitation and class placement only.  Three technique classes are required: this designated Ballet III/IV class plus, Ballet III on Wednesday, and the Saturday combined company class. Pointe B, Contemporary and Studio Company accompanies this level. The adult intermediate class on Tuesday is open to this level and is encouraged to be taken (no additional charge here as there is a tuition cap!).

Hair has to be neatly pulled off the face, with long hair being secured in a ballet bun.
Boys – White fitted t-shirt; black tights (dance support belt as needed); white socks and white canvas split sole ballet shoes.

Ballet IIA

AGES 8-10

Two ballet technique classes are required per week.

The curriculum is a complete and structured classical ballet class with its full embodiment of grace, poise, and physical and mental development. This is for 1st year Ballet II students, or for students who need additional concentration on training due to excessive absences during the year. Students participate in Junior Studio Company during the Fall/Winter semester.

Ballet IIB

This is the 2nd level of Ballet II and is for students who have previously been in this class. The student must show strength and mastery of material covered in Ballet IA. This class meets twice a week. Students in this level also participate in Junior Studio Company in the Fall/Winter semester.

Ballet IIB Conditioning

This 15 minute class precedes Ballet IIB. Overall conditioning and footwork will be the focus. There is no additional tuition charge; but, attendance is expected.

Ballet IIA & B

AGES 8-11 years

Ballet IIA & B are combined on Saturdays. The weekday classes concentrate on the specific technical level of Ballet II. Two classes per week are required for this level.

Ballet II/III

AGES 11 & up

This is a “bridge” class designed to prepare the student for the rigors of Ballet III and is by invitation and placement only. Two classes are required per week. This class is combined with Ballet III & III/IV on Saturdays, and there is Studio Company rehearsal for 1/2 hour after this technique class.

Ballet III

AGES 11 and up

This level is by invitation and placement only. Three ballet classes per week are required. Students are fully immersed in their training at this stage with pointe work included for girls and upper body strength building work for boys. Pointe A accompanies this level with the approval of the director. Students should participate in the Contemporary class and the Studio Company.

Pointe A

AGES 11 and up

Students must be enrolled in BALLET III. This class directly follows a technique class and the staff must approve participation. Pointe work is a privilege afforded those with the requisite commitment to class participation. At this level, students have gained the necessary physical strength, flexibility and understanding of proper body placement. Pointe shoe style and fit must be checked by the instructor before ribbons and elastics are sewn on.

Contemporary

This style is rooted in classical ballet technique, but elements of jazz, neoclassical and modern are incorporated into the movements. Contemporary works are now found in all major dance companies. This class is part of the Ballet III and up curriculum.

Dress requirements:
Class leotard and and convertible tights rolled up over the feet. Socks are optional if the dancer is "sticking" to the floor in turns.

Junior Studio Company

Ballet II students are eligible to join this group that meets during the Fall/Winter semester. There is a performance in January at the end of the semester. This production is in addition to our yearly, end-of-year, production. Rehearsals are 1/2 hour long will take place on Saturdays after their technique class. Performance pieces will be predominantly from classical ballets such as Nutcracker, Coppelia and Cinderella. Contemporary and new works will be introduced in the main Studio Company.

Studio Company

*Students in Ballet II/III and up participate this group. Rehearsals take place after their Saturday technique class: Ballet II/III meets for 1/2 hour and Ballet III and up meets for 1 hour after the II/IIIs. The dancers will learn and perform classical works and new choreography.  A contemporary work taught by Jacob Frazier will also be presented for those dancers who are enrolled in his class. There is a performance at the end of the Fall/Winter semester in January, plus the yearly full school production the end of the Winter/Spring semester.

*Summer session: Studio Co dancers in Ballet III will meet for 1/2 hour after their Saturday technique class. The focus will rotate each week, and one variation will be learned.

Ballet IV

Students who are ready for this level should speak to the director. This level is currently blended with some of the adult level classes.
